In 1927, Mayor and former World War I flyer Charles Hanna felt that the economic future of Syracuse would be greatly enhanced by a first-class airport. The city of Syracuse purchased Old Hinsdale Field for $50,000, and by 1928, the “Syracuse City Airport at Amboy” was handling airmail. By the early 1930s, Ford Tri-motors were routinely touching down on the airport’s three grass runways, and airshows were a common attraction. Thousands of local citizens flocked to welcome such aviation personalities as Charles A. Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Kate Smith. With the outbreak of World War II, the airport became a flight training center, and a new air base was constructed on a 3,500-acre parcel of land north of the city. Mattydale Bomber Base became a commercial airfield in 1948 and was opened to the public in 1949 as the Clarence E. Hancock Airport in 1949, named after a congressman who served the area from 1927 to 1946. The airport was awarded international status in 1970 and renamed Syracuse Hancock International Airport.
